New untitled watercolor piece

Took this photo while roaming Gloucester one evening a few years ago, out in the maze of piers and pylons and forgotten tracts of seawater. This sunset flashed very dramatically and was gone the next minute, and a few days ago while digging through my painting source material it again inspired me.

New watercolor piece, "Autumn Palate"

I have been fascinated for a long time by the work of artists like Hans Hofmann and Wolf Kahn. Their whole philosophy, their approach to nature and their concepts of color and form... it always gets to me. It never ceases to inspire me each time I think about it (a blessing and a curse). I FINALLY found/made time to follow this inspiration with this piece as the result. After several preliminary studies and staying up until 3 am on a work-night..... I have zero regrets.

New Oil Piece "Rosehip"

Got on a roll tonight with another oil piece that has been in the works, and kept looking at these drying rosehips drooping over my palate. A quick shift of surfaces and an hour or two later and here we are. 

Watercolor sketch "Sailing"

I recently learned to sail while vacationing in the Adirondack mountains. I loved the way the sunlight played in through the sails as the wind sculpted them. I made this quick study to capture the proportions and colors in hopes of a possible final piece.

Another watercolor in keeping with the autumn theme. I started this awhile ago after taking this photo just outside work. I liked the simplicity and the unusual composition, and wanted it to be a very tonal, textural work.

It seems my interest changes with the seasons, as now I have become fascinated by the colors and shapes of autumn.

Watercolor Study "Twilight in Winter"

This is the second study piece in keeping with my recent and growing interest in the colors and shapes of winter.
I want it to stress and accent the abstractions of shape and color inherent in nature, while retaining naturalism and  loose representation, and I am fairly satisfied with how this piece turned out in that regard.

Good break away from everything today.
This stick had been sitting in my humidor for awhile, I was intrigued by the unique shape and the colors in the wrapper.
I was a little dodgy at the beginning but warmed up and got in the groove, very fun.

I recently acquired some water-soluble colored pencils. They have a high pigment content, more than I expected.

Excited to work with them more soon.

This is from a photo of a hike that my fiance and I took this summer as we near the top of the mountain, around 6000 feet.

New piece, and beginnings of newer piece

Fiance got me a set of brown conte for easter. I was so enamoured with the three shades of brown it offered that I drew this. I also wanted to try watercolor technique that a friend showed me... thus, conte on watercolor-toned paper... siannas, ochres, russets and umbers, mmmmm....

I titled it (Love Poem, Part 6) after a part of a poem I wrote about her.

Specifically one stanza:

With hair like a crown

Of female beauty lying

In curls of dark value

Next is the start of a peice on gessoed 300 lb watercolor paper from a photo of my brother in egypt. Will post as it progresses/when I feel like it.

Finished large-scale piece, photo from Wabash Art Show

Waahoo.

I (tentatively as is [and perhaps ought to be] always the case with art) finished a 5 foot by 3 foot painting that has been in the works for a couple weeks.

I've titled it "Love Like Memory".

Also I've included a photo of my first place winning piece hanging in the Honeywell center at the Nine County Art Show.

Kinda neat!

Further progress, plus commission

yes yes yes.

I have sketched out the image for the large scale piece. I had to darken the photo quite a bit so you can see the lines, -the studio is actually a very light place.

The other piece (fun fact: I ALWAYS spell "piece" as "peice", and then correct it while telling myself 'all I have to do is spell "pie" and then add "ce"' ....I love pie, and yet it haunts me still)

Anyways, I started working on another commission, so I figured I'd put up what I've got so far.

New large scale piece in the works

I began preparations for a new large-scale oil piece.

Stretched a 3' by 5' canvas.

Gessoed some paper and a piece of 16" by 20" un-stretched canvas for preliminary studies.

Finished one study on paper last night.

I'll keep posting as it progresses.

You can see the sun coming in through the back of the canvas, kinda neat... wish I could paint like the sun...
